The Spare Change Effect: Technology at Point of Purchase

The purpose of this study is to understand various shopping behaviors and purchase decision making when certain technologies are employed in a store. By knowing such information, retailers learn the type of technologies to have at checkout that provides the greatest value to their customers. To conduct this study, a web-based shopping simulation has been developed. If you participate, the first step of the study is a survey regarding your attitudes toward shopping and technology.

  • You must be 18 years or older to participate in this survey.
  • Completing the simulation and survey are voluntary and will not affect your grade in this course.
  • You may choose not to participate in this study.
  • Risks of participation in the survey are not greater, considering probability and magnitude, than those ordinarily encountered in daily life.
  • It will take you about 5-7 minutes to complete the simulation and survey.
  • By participating in this study, you may be contributing to the knowledge base that retailers employ to better serve its customers.
  • Information will be used in presentations and publications.
  • Participation is completely anonymous.
  • All your answers will be grouped with the answers of others.
  • The data will not be coded in any identifiable way.
  • All simulation and survey data will be reported in aggregate.
